| When doing a full restoration it requires much serious preparation. We recommend a complete project list be established before the job is started. It is amazing just how much space a stripped classic car can take up so thorough planning is essential. One could take an MG Midget. The last project Motorline undertook on a Midget involved a complete new chassis and body, both of which are available to buy. This is probably the best, and certainly the cheapest way to deal with a restoration on a classic car as it simply means transferring all the parts from the old chassis/body to the new, restoring or replacing parts as you go. Other classic cars of course are not so simple and many parts that are no longer available have to be made either by ourselves or by one of the thousands of specialists that we have gathered on Motorline’s database over the years. | | | | | As an example one could take an Triumph Spitfire. The last classic car restoration project Motorline undertook on a Spitfire involved a complete new chassis and body, both of which are available to buy. When carrying out a full restoration the first job is to make sure the body fitted the chassis properly – at Motorline we always spend some time doing this. Once we are completely satisfied we remove the body again and go through a thorough rust proofing process. At this point the body is painted, inside and out, and stored carefully until it is required. We then start to transfer brake and suspension components to the new chassis, renewing, re-fabricating and replacing parts as necessary as we go. | Motorline Tel & Fax: 01273 858999 The Workshop Heighton Street Firle, Nr Lewes Sussex BN8 6NZ | | | | In the meantime the engine and gearbox are usually completely rebuilt to whatever specification the customer requires - usually this work will be done off sight by one of our regular specialists. Next, the body goes back on, a new wiring loom is fitted, and we begin the long process of fitting instruments, pedal clusters, steering column, carpets, fuel tank, seats etc. All parts are checked over and rebuilt or renewed as necessary. The picture below is one of our current projects, a 1948 Singer 9. We specialise in classic car servicing, restoration and storage so a project like this is exactly what we are looking for. | | Finally, the big moment arrives and we start the engine. This is always an exiting moment and though we have all been doing this for years we always enjoy the first new breath from a freshly built engine. Before the car goes to the customer it is MOT’d of course, and then extensively road tested. This is really just a brief précis of what happens during a rebuild, but hopefully it gives you a brief idea of what is involved.
